Applied Laryngeal anatomy for the Airway Assistant: reducing the risk of undetected oesophageal intubation
Undetected oesophageal intubation is still a cause of death within anaesthesia, despite the increased use of video-laryngoscopy and capnography monitoring.
Current recommendations for safer airway management are to utilise video-laryngoscopy for all elective intubation procedures and to involve all members of the airway team, making intubation a collective process rather than an individual one.
It is recommended that all members of the airway team should view the video screen during laryngoscopy and a 2 - person verbal confirmation check of successful endotracheal intubation should be performed.
In order to undertake this role effectively and reduce the risk of undetected oesophageal intubation, the airway assistant must feel confident in their anatomical knowledge of the glottis and it's surrounding structures; increasing this knowledge and understanding is the fundamental aim of this online course.
